Alfredo Simon destined for trial, talks about shooting incident
Earlier, it was reported that a baseball player had shot and killed a man, while injuring another severely. Baltimore Orioles reliever, Alfredo Simon has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and the confirmation comes from
the Dominican Republic. That is where the incident took place and Simon will have to face the trial there.
The incident that took place on the night of New Year’s Eve has picked up quite a lot of steam in the recent days. Many reports have come through on the tragic event and while Alfredo’s team has not come out with details on the
incident, it appears matters have gotten worse for the player. Simon has wilfully handed himself over to the police. The O’s reliever is looking at a resolution on the matter and while that may take time, there are no reports regarding his role in baseball
in the next few months.
Simon allegedly shot a 25-year-old man and severely injured the victim’s brother who is 17 years old. Alfredo’s lawyer, Carlos Olivares was out to explain the incident clearly to the press. He talked lightly on the matter. He spoke
of the night and told the press that Alfredo was firing celebratory shots in the air when a bullet connected with a man in Luperon. The man apparently, happens to be the ball player’s cousin.
Those remarks were further strengthened by Simon who came out on CNN to talk of the incident. He spoke of the deceased and revealed their relationship.
"In truth, that young man was my friend, like a brother," Simon told CNN. "It wasn't a thing like we began arguing and I started shooting. It was some accident; it happened by accident."
Public Prosecutor, Victor Mueses, will be trying to prove an alternative version of the story. The lawyer believes the crime was involuntary manslaughter. While there is no word on a trial, it is believed the ball player will have
to face the charges in his home country. Some other native Dominican players in Major League Baseball have also expressed their disappointment over the matter in recent days.
"The version that we have is that there was a dispute between two women and (Simon) tried to dissolve it, fired a shot that ended up wounding a young person in the arm and that same bullet lodged in the chest of the deceased,"
Mueses said by phone.
