Alfredo Simon’s pitching helps Baltimore Orioles defeat Cleveland Indians 6-5 – MLB Recap
Baltimore Orioles’ starter, Alfredo Simon had a remarkable day with the ball as he permitted just two runs on three hits and gave the Orioles a 6-5 victory against the Cleveland Indians at Oriole Park, Baltimore on July 16.
During the first inning, the Orioles’ batters scored their first run to get a 1-0 lead when Adam Jones hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and J.J. Hardy posted one run. In the second and third inning of the game, the batters failed to connect any scoring
shot and got out.
The Orioles took a 2-0 lead during the fourth inning when Derrek Lee singled off left-field and Nick Markakis added a single run. Fifth inning was in favour of the pitchers as they tossed the ball in ideal line to restrict the shots of the batters.
Simon pitched his seven innings with an ERA of 4.36 and struck-out just five batters on his 79 pitches. Simon commented on the game and said, “When I was there (on the mound) I don't think about that. I just get my job done and do it the best I can so my
family could see my game tonight. I wanted to do it for them over there.”
The Indians got off the mark by scoring two runs at the top of the sixth inning when Austin Kearns and Lou Marson both contributed the first two collective runs on the double-run shot of Michael Brantley towards deep right-field. On the other side, the Orioles
went ahead 3-2 by scoring one run at the bottom of the sixth inning. Markakis hit a solo homer (412 feet) towards right-centre field to break the tie runs.
The pitchers were on top during the seventh inning and threw score-less pitches. In the eighth inning, the Orioles extended their lead 6-2 by blasting three quick runs. Markakis scored one run on the drive of Jones to deep right-field. The second and third
run of the eighth inning was taken by Jones and Matt Wieters, respectively.
In the ninth inning, the Indians were able to smash just three runs and ended the game 6-5. Orlando Cabrera doubled off deep right-field while Asdrubal Cabrera, Travis Hafner and Carlos Santana each singled to complete a three-run campaign.
With this impressive win, the Orioles were able to stay alive in the four-game series at Baltimore.
