Algae as a bio fuel?

I heard algae is a possible biofuel alternate. I was wondering

if I can use it now for my own energy needs. i.e.

1) can I grow it myself, and what strains should I grow.

2) How do I convert it to bio fuel.

3) can I put it in my car engine? Are there any legal issues?

4) can I put it in my oil burning furnace. Are there any legal issues?

its not the algae it self it would be a by product of algae mixed with other chemmicals
