Question:

Algae eater help?

i just bought a chinese algae eater

he is in my small tropical tank

he does not move much but when he does he moves very fast (it took the lady 15 minutes to catch it)

is this ok

also can i feed him flakes and vegetables as i cannot afford sinking pellets

also how big will he get

  1. Chinese algae eaters aren't a good community fish.  As they get older, they have a tendency to stop eating the algae, and start to become aggressive and territorial with the other fish in the tank, so keep an eye on it.  They also grow to about 9 inches, so a large tank is needed with them.  And him moving fast, sounds fine.  For the food, just be sure to feed him and the other fish a varied diet.  Get the sinking pellets and some algae wafers when you can.  All those fish will love the veggies as well.


  2. yes that is fine and u dont need to buy sinking pellets some CAEs get to 12" ..... wht fish are in the tank with him is my worry  ....... CAE sometimes like to eat the algee slime coat of other fish sometimes this can turn bad where the CAE will make holes in ur other fish b careful and if anything happens get him out ASAP hope i helped

  3. mine is active and i think there all fast cause i struggled to catch mine when i changed tanks....i feed my fishes flakes.....i see my algae eater eating the flakes once they sink to the bottom...but there suppose to eat algae from your tank, plants etc.... i got mine very small and now his about  5 inches long
