I'm given the table:

Traffic forecasts for the Hoover Dam

Year: 2007- 2008 - 2009

Number of cars per day: 16, 300 - 16,780 - 17,260

and asked

Approximately how many vehicles will cross the dam in the years 2007 through 2017, inclusive? (Hint: Assume 365 days per year.)

Please help :)

  1. I'm good at algebra but not that good sorry

  2. The answer is 138086800 vehicles. Every year the number of vehicles per day increases by 480. When you figure out the number of cars per day for eah year and multiply each year by 365 and add them together, you get 138086800 cars total.

  3. ok first you find the difference between the years

    2007= 16300

    2008= 16780  which is 480 more than 2007

    2009= 17260 which is 480 more than 2008

    so to say

    17260 +480 = year 2010

    17740 + 480 = year 2011

    18220 +480= year 2012

    18700 +480 = year 2013

    and so on

    and of course this is only just per day

    to find the whole year= per day times 365 = the whole year

    good luck

  4. What you need is the slope

    Slope = Rate of change

    y2 - y1 = m (x2 - x1)

    m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

    m = (16780 - 16300) / (1-0)

    Assuming 2007 = 0 year

    2008 = 1 year and so on

    m = 480

    Note: You could have also chose the other 2 points

    i.e. (17260 - 16780)/(2-1)

    since this would be the difference between 2009 & 2008

    y = mx

    m = 480, x is the year and you can solve for the # of cars

    Good luck :)

  5. If you graph the 3 points (2007,16300), (2008, 16780), and (2009, 17260) they form a line. The equation of the line passing through the points is y=480x-947060. Where y is the number of vehicles crossing the dam and x is the year. You can calculate the equation by calculating the slope between two of the points and then finding the y-intercept. Then to find y for any given year, just substitute the year in for x and calculate y. For 2010 the number of cars is 17740, with the number of cars increasing by a common difference of 480 cars per year. Then to find the number crossing from 2007 to 2017, use the sum of an arithmetic series. S=11/2(16300+21100)=205700. So, approximately 205,700 vehicles will cross the dam in the years 2007 through 2017 inclusive.

    I love the challenge!
