  1. To simplify an expression means to calculate what you can so that you get a shorter expression. In this case, we should find the difference between the two fractions:

First, we find their LCD (least common denominator). Then we calculate the numerator. Here the LCD is 4*3=12

    So, we have 3/12 - 8/12 = -5/12

    Hope that helps :)

  2. To subtract fractions you have to find the least common denominater for both fractions. What number is a multiple of both for and 3, 12 right? Well you have to make both fractions denominaters 12. What you do to the bottom you have to do to the top. So for 1/4 will equal 3/12 and 2/3 will equal 8/12 now you can subtract. So 3/12-8/12 will equal -5/12. Hope that helped.

  3. you take the lcm of the domninator (which is 12)

and then increase the fractions(mulitiplication) until the denominator is 12

    1/4 - 2/3

    3(1/4) - 4(2/3)

    3/12 - 8/12

    which equals -5/12
