Algebra Homework Help Needed?

Question

i know this is like my 3rd question, but what do i do if i have only on "thing" (can't think of name) such as -5y-5(-6-2y)=0 i am not sure what to do with the -5?? Also, what would i do if i had no outside integer such as; (12u-5)-5(4u+5)=50? I know what to do if i had an outside integer before the parentheses.....but what would i do...?

GIVEN

-5y - 5(-6-2y) = 0

Apply the distributive law for the -5, like so,

- 5y + 30 + 10y = 0

-5y + 10y = - 30

5y = -30

y = -6

For the second one,

(12u - 5) - 5(4u+5) = 50

do the same procedure as above. Apply the distributive law

12u - 5 - 20u - 25 = 50

Combining like terms,

12u - 20u = 50 + 5 + 25

-8u = 80

u = -10

y ("the thing") is called a variable. Here's how to solve the first equation:

-5y -5 (-6 -2y) = 0

Multiply each term in the parenthesis by -5:

-5y + 30 + 10y = 0

Then, add all like terms:

5y + 30 = 0

Solve for y:

y = -30/5 = -6

The second equation:

(12u -5) - 5(4u+5) = 50

Same here: Since there is no number before (12u - 5), it is understood to be 1. So no need to do any arithematic there.

For the second term -5(4u+5), again multiply each term inside the parenthesis with -5:

(12u - 5) - 20u - 25 = 50

Then, add all like terms:

-8u -30  = 50

Transpose -30 on the other side of the equation and add it 50. Remember, when you transpose, the sign of -30 takes on the oppositive sign, so you'll be adding 50 to 30, not 50 + (-30):

-8u = 80

Then, divide both sides by -8 to solve for u:

u = -10

You can spell parentheses but you can't do this?! Mind boggling anyway what you must do for the -5(-6-2y) is multiply each part inside the brackets by -5 so we get 30+10y and 30+5y=0 having no outside integer is the same as multiplying each bit by 1 so they stay the same.
