  1. Just remember the following rules

    is means "="

    times = multiply

    sum = add

    less = subtract

    difference = subtract

    a)

    5 * (x + 9) = 39

    5x + 45 = 39

    5x = -6

    x = -6/5

    -----------------------------

    b)

    this one is trickier, start from the inside and work out

    difference of a number and for means

    x - 4

    three times that

    3(x - 4)

    nine less than that

    3(x - 4) - 9

    is 36

    3(x - 4) - 9 = 36

    3x - 12 - 9 = 36

    3x - 21 = 36

    3x = 57

    x = 19

    --------------------------------------

    c)

    If x is an odd integer, x + 2 is the next consecutive odd integer, so...

    x + (x + 2) = 44

    2x + 2 = 44

    2x = 42

    x = 21

    So the integers are...

    21 and 23

    --------------------------

    EDIT

    Sorry, I mis-read the second question.

    difference of a number and for means

    x - 4

    three times that

    3(x - 4)

    nine less that

    9 - 3(x - 4)

    is 36

    9 - 3(x - 4)  = 36

    9 - 3x + 12 = 36

    -3x + 21 = 36

    -3x = 15

    x = -5

  2. 5(x+9) = 39

    5x + 45 = 39

    5x = -6

    x = -6/5

    9-3(x-4) = 36

    9-3x+12=36

    -3x=15

    x=-5

    (x+1) + (x-1) = 44

    x=22

    and the consecutive odd numbers = 21 and 23
