1. ok so first you have

    4x+49<9-x

    add x to both sides

    5x + 49< 9

    then subtract 49 from both

    5x< -40

    then divide by 5

    x<-8

    :]

    dont forget that if you divide by a - you have to switch the sign

  2. x=negative 8

  3. I'm not quite sure if this is correct because I just calculated it in my head but I think it's x<-8

    4x+49<9-x

    4x+x<9-49

    5x<-40/5

    x<-8

  4. This is how it is done step by step

    4x+49-49<9-x-49(subtract 49 on both sides)

    4x<-x-40

    4x+x<-x-40+x(add x on both sides)

    5x<-40

    (5x/5)<((-40)/5)

    x<(-8)

    Check the answer: -

    4(-8)+49=17

    9-(-8)=17

    so 4x+49<9-x

  5. Move x's and numbers to different sides: 5x < -40

    Simplify: x < -8.

    By the way, x can be negative. Just can't say something like -5 > 8.

  6. *add x to each side*

    4x+x+49<9

           =

    5x+49<9

    *subtract 49 from each side*

    5x = -40

    *divide each side by 5*

    x = -8

    It's supposed to be a negative, you didn't do anything wrong.

  7. maybe this will help hotmath.com

  8. THere is nothing wrong with getting a negative. I got x<-8, so it can be -9,-10,etc.

  9. 4x + 49 <9-x

         - 49   - 49

    4x<-40-x

    +x     +x

    5x<-40

    x<-8

    * i totally understand your problem. i took algebra two years ago. it was sooo hard for me. but compared to alg. 2 it's sooo easy :)

  10. the answer is x= -8

  11. 4x+49<9-x-----> 5x+49<9 ----> 5x<-40 -----> x<-8
