Algebra help please read ?

Question

the ratio of hems to haws was 9 to 3 . if a total of 108 were present , how many of them were hems ?

( for b ) 10 - 4b + w =0

please explain the problems dont just give the answer !

if the total is 108, then the number of hems will be

9/(9+3)  *  108

= 9/12 * 108

=81

by the way, i don't understand ur second question, wat u want to find??

well start with 9+3=12 then 12 goes into 108 9 times, yes. so for every 12 ** there is 9 hems so you do 9x9 which =81 and to check find out what the other is and add them together to make sure they add up to 108. for the other one you do the same for every 12 ** there is 3 haws so you do 9x3 which =27. and 27+81=108.

for b you just put things to the other side like bellow and when you put one thing to the other side of a = you make it opposite so if 2 is on the right of the = and you put it to the other side its -2. then you cancel down to what you need.

10-4b+w=0

10+w=4b

10=4b-w

5=2b-0.5w

2.5=b-0.25w

That means if you have 9 hems, you have 3 haws, for a total of 12.

You can change it to a fraction...

hems = 9/12 = 3/4

haws = 3/12 = 1/4

So... HEMS account for 3/4 of the total.

Since the total is 108...

Hems = 108(3/4) = 81

(I don't understand where your equation comes from.)

A much simpler approach answer to this problem would be to create the equation 9x+3x=108 where 9x represents the number of hems and 3x the number of haws. Solving this results x=9 and there are 3x9 = 27 haws and 9x9 = 81 hems
