  1. 1/3x = 12

    multiply the denominator 3 times 3 to cancel it out.

    then multiply the 12 times 3 (becuase you have to do the same thing to both sides)

    that gives you

    1x = 36

    x = 36

    20 + 50w = 350 -10

    -20                    -20

    50w = 320

    w = 6.4

  2. (1/3)x=12

        x/3=12       multiply both sides by 3

           x=36

    or is it

    1/(3x)=12      multiply both sides by 3x

          1=36x            divide both sides by 36

       1/36=x

    20+5w=350-10

    20+5w=340        subtract 20 frm both sides

         5w=320       divide both sides by 5

           w=64

  3. 1/3X = 12

    -1/3   -1/3

    X = 35/3

    You have to subtract both sides by 1/3 to get x alone. This leaves you with x = 35/3

    You do the same thing with this one. You have to get W by itself.

    20+5w=350-10

    You can subtract 10 from 350 first, so now you have:

    20+5w = 340

    Subtract 20 from both sides, you get:

    5w = 320

    Now, divide both side by 5 (variable you are left with by W and its being mulitplied so ou do the opposite)

    Leaves you with:

    W = 64

  4. times each # by the highest common denominater.

    EX.  1/3 x 3 = 12 x 3

            x=36

    w=64

  5. First things first, let's do 1/3x=12. I'm not going to give you the answer, but you need to get the x by itself. In order to do that, you need to use the LCD (least common denominator). Whenever you're dealing w/ getting rid of a fraction, use the LCD, which in this case would be 3. Multiply 3 by both sides of the equation.

    (3) 1/3x= (3)12.

    The 3's in the first 1/2 of the equation cancel out and leave you with just x. Then on the other side, you multiply 3 by 12. So x=36.

    For the 2nd one, 20+ 5w= 350-10, you need to simplify a little. Add the terms to the right of the = sign together. So then you have

    20+ 5w= 340

    You need to get the W isolated (all alone). So, subtract 20 from both sides.

    5w=320    Divide both sides by 5.

    w=65

    Good luck! And never be afraid to ask your teacher/professor for help if you don't understand.

  6. 1/3*x=12

    x/3=12

    x=12*3

    x=36

    20+5w=350-10

    20+5w=340

    5w=340-20

    5w=320

    w=320/5

    w=64
