1. in a football game, the quarterback is 15 yards away from makign a first down adn is running 264 yards per minute. within 0.03 seconds of a minute later, a linebacker on the opposite side of the first down marker begins running directly towards teh quarterback at 440 yards per minute. will the linebacker be able to tackle the quarterback before he gets teh first down?

  1. If the quaterback is running at 264 yards/min and the goal is 15 yards away then using the formula

    distance=rate x time

time=distance/rate= 15/264= 0.057 minutes to get to the goal line

Within 0.03 seconds the quaterback will be (264)(0.03/60)=0.132 yards closer to the first down

    15-0.132=14.868 yards away

Now the linebacker is also 14.868 yards away from the first down but on the opposite side.

Now the time it would take for the linebacker to reach the first down would be (again using the above formula) 0.034 minutes

Now when the quaterback is 14.868 yards he is 0..03 seconds closer which is 0.0005 minutes closer.

So now the time it take the quaterback is 0.057-0.0005=0.0565

The linebacker will be able to get to the first down faster (0.022 min  faster) than the quaterback therefore having the oppurtunity to tackle him.

  2. You have said that the QB is 15 yds away from the 1st down and that the LB is "on the opposite side" of the 1st down marker ... you didn't say that the LB had any distance to travel to get to the 1st down marker ?? If he's already at the marker he would obviously be able to stop the QB ...

In the one answer (lilbp 11) calculated that the QB will run 7.92 yds in .03 sec, but she multiplied 264 yds/minute x .03 seconds with no conversion from min to sec... in .03 sec the QB will only run .132 yds (.03 sec = .0005 min x 264 yds/min = .132 yds)

Using 264 yds/min for the QB and 440 yds/min for the LB, the QB can run 4.4 yds/sec and covers 15 yds in 3.41sec. The LB can run 7.3 yds/sec and covers 15 yds in 2.04 sec.

    Calculations:

    (QB) 264 yds/60 sec = 4.4 yds/sec

    15yds x 1s/4.4 yds = 3.41 sec

    (LB) 440 yds/60 sec = 7.3 yds/sec

    15yds x 1s/7.3 yds = 2.04 sec.

That's the best I could do to help. I honestly don't think that the previous answer was correct ... but I don't have the answer either. The question seems to be off or missing information. Maybe you can do something with my calculations. Good luck :)

Later ... lilbp11 fixed the error and may be on the right track. The question is still ambiguous about where the LB begins and when ...
