A scuba diver is returning to the surface from a depth of 165 feet. The safe ascent rate for a diver is 30 feet per minute. How many minutes will it take the diver to return to the surface?

  1. 5 1/2 minutes.

    165 feet total distance divided by 30 feet per minute.

    That leaves you with 5 minutes (150 feet), plus a remainder of 15 feet, which is half of what can be done in a minute.

    Ergo, 5 1/2.


  2. Its just 165 divided by 30, since the diver travels 30 feet evey minute.

  3. 165ft/ 30ft/min

    cross off the feet and you are left with 5.5 minutes
