In 1993, the life expectancy of males in a certain country was 73.1 years. In 2000, it was 76.8 years. Let E represent the life expectancy in year t and let t represent the number of years since 1993.

The linear function that fits the data best would be?

E(t)=?t+?

(round to the nearst tenth)

Use the function to predict the life expectancy of males in 2005.

  1. E(12)=79.1

  2. Let 1993 be the initial year and

    Let the linear function be E(t) = at + b

    73.1 = (1993-1993)a + b = b

    76.8 = (2000-19993)a + b

    => b = 73.1

    => a = 0.5

    Therefore E(t) = 0.5t - 73.1 where t = no. of years after 1993

    E(12) = 0.5 x 12 + 73.1 = 79.1

    hth.
