In a naval engagement 1/3 of the fleet was captured 1/6th was sunk and two ships were destroyed by fire . 1/7th of the surviving ships were lost, in a storm after the battle . Finally the 24 remaining ships sailed home , how many ships were in the fleet before the engagement.

  2. Well, on the way back, 1/7 of survivors sank and 24 were left.

    If x = Total ships remaining after battle, then 6/7 x = 24.

    Solve for x by diving by 6 and multiplying by 7, you get 28 remaining ships.

    Let n=Number of ships before the battle and you get the equation

    n - 1/3n - 1/6n -2 = 28 (add 2 to both sides)

    n - 1/3n - 1/6n = 30 (get common denominators)

    6/6n - 2/6n - 1/6n = 30 (combine terms)

    3/6 n = 30 (reduce)

    1/2n = 30 (multiply both sides by 2)

    n = 60
