Algeria swept by Brazil in final round of action at FIVB World Cup - Volleyball
Algeria gave its best shot to save an important match of FIVB World Cup in the final round but Brazil denied their efforts and made a clean sweep. The South Americans performed amazingly well and seized a 3-0 (25-18, 25-8, 25-13) win over Algeria. The packed
Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Japan hosted the match on Thursday, November 17.
Match overview
Brazil started out on strong footing and followed the fine attack strategy in the opening set. Tandara Caixeta came up with strong offensive attack and added quick points. Algeria’s Yasmine Oudni offered some resistance and saved points on early blocks.
Nonetheless, the Brazilian score kept rising and Algeria trailed behind at the first technical timeout. Meanwhile, Brazil caught up in a flurry of mistakes that allowed Algeria to level the scores at 10. Faiza Tsabet of Algeria displayed good action on the
net and contributed good points. However, Juciely Cristina Barreto came up with a couple of kills and put Brazil in lead. Algerian fought well but dropped the set with 7-point deficit (18-25).
After securing the opening set, Brazil carried out momentum in second set. They jumped out of the gate and built early lead of 8-3. Caixeta was still on fire and she worked out amazing cut-shots to improve her team’s score. Algeria usually lagged behind
and could not catch up with Brazil. The African players failed to sustain the pressure and totally collapsed in the second set. Algeria relied on duo of Tsabet and Safia Boukhima but it was not enough to cope with the power of resilient rival. Brazil notched
points after points and quickly put an end to second set with huge margin. Second set ended with the final score of 25-8, while Algeria was on the losing end.
Algerian team was deep down in trouble. The devastating second-set loss put a lot of pressure on them. The Head Coach, Ahmed Boukacem, called his players off court when they quickly fell four points behind in the third set. Algerian players were regrouped
and followed a new strategy. After coach’s instruction, Mouni Abderrahim responded with a classy crosscourt shot from the right but Caixeta was there to fight the challenge. Brazil rallied 8-3 run and left Algeria far behind. Algeria lost third set in row
(13-25) and accepted the better status of Brazil.
Key players
Tandara Caixeta of Brazil proved to be the most effective player of the match and topped all the scorers. She was given the Most Impressive Player award by the FIVB, as a token of appreciation. Caixeta chipped in 16 points for Brazil, while Juciely Barreto
and Adenizia Silva contributed nine points apiece. On the other hand, Algerian Faiza Tsabet put up effort for her team. She added 15 points and earned the status of top-scorer on her side. Rest of the Algerian players displayed an average performance and could
not catch the limelight.
