Algerian women’s volleyball team defeats Cameroon by 3-1 in final of 2011 All Africa Games
The Algerian women’s volleyball team and the Cameroon squad met each other on September 7th for the final match of the 2011 All Africa Games. The city of Mozambique played host to the event in Maputo. The venue of the decisive contest was the Maxaquene Hall.
The Algerians walked away winners by 3-1.
The teams fought against each other for four thrilling sets at the end of which the Algerian squad was celebrating their hard earned win. It took the Algerians a total of 109 minutes to finally breathe out a sigh of relief upon having won the gold medal
at the following final set scores: 25-14, 25-23, 18-25 and 25-14.
The first set of the match was easily dominated by Algeria as they smoothly sailed on towards a win while the Cameroon side was trying hard to get their footing right. The second set saw a better performance from the Cameroon side as both the teams were
locked in a tight struggle till the end which was reached in favour of the Algerians again. The loss of the first two sets triggered the Cameroon squad into giving a better performance than before and were able to live up to their goals and bag the third set.
However, that was the only moment of glory that the Cameroon squad could experience as Algeria won the fourth set by a comfortable margin.
The Algerians played the first set of the game better than Cameroon in all aspects. Most specifically, the defence of the Algerian team played an important role in restricting the scoring of their opponents. The Algerian setter Fatima Zahra managed to successfully
confound the Cameroon blockers and facilitated the Algerian hitters all through the set that got her team a lead at 8-3. Once they had the lead, the Algerians did not look back and won the opening set of the game at 25-14.
Cameroon got the lead at the start of the second set of the game at 4-0 and led all the way to the first technical time out at 8-2. However, Algeria did not give up the chase and was eventually able to make the match reach a tie at 20-20. Before long, Algeria
had speeded ahead to seal the deal on the set and grab another win at 25-23.
The loss of the first two sets sent a wakeup call to Cameroon that pushed them to a lead at the first technical time out. Cameroon kept going strong and Algeria fell at 18-25. Algeria did not take defeat well and dominated the fourth set all through to end
it in a win at 25-14.
The victory came as a welcome addition to the Algerian delegation as their men’s volleyball team could not scrap out a win against the Cameroon side in the championship match played on the same day.
