Algorithms wore Consortium down in the deep stretch to take the Gulfstream Park allowance test
Trained by Todd Pletcher for Starlight Racing, Algortihms, the 2-year-old colt came back to the races after a long layoff in an allowance claimer at Gulfstream Park on 16 December, 2011, to only resume from where he left off as he won the six and a half
furlong dash under jockey Javier Castellano.
The Kentucky bred son of Bernardini, out of mare Ava Knowsthecode by Cryptoclearance, Algorithms ran a thrilling race to defeat the favoured, Consortium, who was sent off with the odds of 4 to 5 to win the race.
Both Bernardini colts were exiting victory in their debut races. The 2-year-old colt, Algorithms, was coming off a maiden special weight race win at Belmont Park on 3 June, 2011, as Javier Castellano led the colt to post a 5 ¼ lengths victory over Nonno’s
Bay, who finished second and Behemoth in third, while Algorithms covered the five furlong distance in 57.55 seconds.
The Kentucky bred, Kiaran McLaughlin trained son of Bernardini, out of mare Marietta by Machiavellian, Consortium broke his maiden recently on 12 November, 2011, when under Andy Garcia, Consortium took over a distance of six and a half furlongs to defeat
Rise Against in second and School Spirit in third.
Topping the debut race distance of six and a half furlongs in 1 minute and 17.10 seconds at Aqueduct.
In the Gulfstream Park’s allowance claimer, Javier Castellano made Algorithms stalk for a while sitting in third position. Hovering over the rest of the field from the outside on the backstretch of the 6 ½ furlong dash.
With Seven Kind the one to perform the pace setting duties, Consortium raced in between the two in second place. Algorithms wore down Consortium in the deep stretch to hit the wire first as Seven Kind finished third.
“It was a big effort in his first start since June,” Pletcher said. “We’ve always had high hopes for him and expected him to run well, but we knew he was running against another nice colt that had shown promise. He came out of the maiden race with a minor
hock issue. He didn’t need surgery, just time.
