Ali Carter feels compelled to play every snooker event in recent season – Snooker Update
Runner up in the recently finished 2012 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England’s Ali Carter will be starting his campaign in the new season soon with his participation in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament. However,
due to the addition of some new tournaments in the calendar, Carter feels compelled in all these events.
While speaking to BBC Sport, Carter said, “In snooker, feathers have been ruffled because people are feeling like they are employees of the game. Which isn't how we used to be. If I was 17 again starting off it's brilliant. Now I'm almost 33 and I've got
a little boy, I want to be spending time with him. I don't want to be going down the motorway and playing in a PTC event.”
The Captain added, “But the way the tour is structured you get penalised if you don't go to nearly every event because Barry decided to put ranking points in almost every event.”
Recently during the 2012 World Snooker Championship proceedings, World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn made an announcement that the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) has decided to add more snooker events in the next season. After
that the WPBSA added three Asian Players Tour Championship (APTC) events along with International Snooker Championship in China.
Besides, the Wuxi Classic event, which was an invitational non-ranking contest, was also given the status of a major ranking event. Now, almost all tournaments in the new snooker season contain ranking points which has made it compulsory for the potters
to take part in all events so that they can maintain their rankings in the overall standings of World Snooker.
Carter is a bit disturbed because of this new ranking system and feels that he is being pushed by the WPBSA to play in all snooker tournaments regardless of his own will. Due to the same reason, the reigning World Snooker Champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan has
refused to sign the central contract with World Snooker because he does not want to play in all snooker tournaments of the 2012-13 Snooker Season. It will be interesting to see how Carter and many of the other players perform during the new snooker season
with the additional tournaments being added on.
