The veteran midfielder expressed delight after re-signing for his former club and vowed to perform at his level best. The decision came soon after the departure of Ali Daei, who failed in his attempt to guide Persepolis to the league title. The so called
‘Wizard of Tehran’ received a warm welcome from the home fans, who wished him all the very best for his future. The officials hoped that the veteran would lead his side to the title at the end of the 2011/12 campaign.
Persepolis won the Hafzi Cup last week, beating Malavan in the finals by an aggregate 4-3 score. Daei was the coach at that time but resigned from his duties after the triumph. Karimi congratulated his teammates for clinching the trophy for the second consecutive
time. Karimi reflected back at his time with Schalke and considered it a massive disappointment in his career.
The midfielder signed a six-month deal at Schalke in January 2011 but was confined to the bench for most part with the Royal Blues. Persepolis acting President, Habib Kashani, told, “Ali Karimi has always been interested in playing for Persepolis. He will
be handed number 8 in Persepolis in coming season.”
The President also commented on the likely prospects for the coaching role. He told that four to five names have been shortlisted and the candidates will be contacted in a few days time. He refrained from naming any of the short listed individuals.
Kashani concluded by saying, "So far, four coaches have recommended their programs and Persepolis technical committee will choose the best option within the next few days.”
Ali Karimi was a Persepolis player from 1998 to 2001 and then returned for a loan spell during the 2008/09 season. The Iranian also has 112 International caps under his belt ever since he made his debut in 1998.
