Alisa Kleybanova back on the Tour after beating cancer – Tennis News
Alisa Kleybanova will return to the tennis courts after fighting cancer for the last 10 months. The Russian was diagnosed with a disease called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in last May.
The 22-year-old, who rose to the 20th spot in the Sony Ericsson WTA Rankings in February last year, was at her peak form when she started to suffer from the disease.
Kleybanova shared that she was bearing excessive fatigue and flu before medical examinations revealed this shocking fact.
Talking to the reporters in the pre tournament press conference, the Russian said, "I was feeling sick, like the cold or flu, and it was happening quite a lot. I was playing through it but I wasn't feeling well in practice, and
I got really sick in Rome. I decided to stop and see, deep inside, what was really going wrong."
The Russian added, “I don’t want to think about rankings, I just want to be on the court and feel good. I just want to be myself. I have a huge motivation to just live at 100 percent, every day of my life.”
Kleybanova has won two titles in her career so far. The Russian clinched her first crown when she upset the then world number seven, Elena Dementieva, in the final at the BMW Malaysian Open. Her second title came in Seoul, after
beating Klara Zakapalova in the final.
Although she could not win any title in the last season, the 5ft 11in tall achieved his highest ranking in 2011, as a result of a couple of good performances in Sydney and Dubai.
The right-hander got herself treated in Italy. Kleybanova completed her treatment in December and did not wait for too long, starting training right away in Florida.
Currently ranked 248th in the world, Kleybanova has been awarded a wild card entry at the Sony Ericsson Open. She is drawn to meet Johanna Larsson of Sweden in the first round.
This will be the second meeting between Kleybanova and Larsson. In their only previous encounter, Kleybanova defeated the Swede in straight sets 7-6(4) 6-2 in the first round at the US Open in 2010.
“I know there will be some stress and nerves ahead of matches but it’s not the most important thing in my life anymore,” she said.
She played her last match at the Italian Open, losing to Shahar Peer of Israel 3-6, 5-7 in the second round.
