Alison Van Uytvanck labours into the final qualifying round at Brussels Ladies Open
Belgian wild card entrant Alison Van Uytvanck stunned eight seeded German Laura Siegemund after making an epic comeback from a set down to win in two hours and seven minutes.
She registered a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 success at Royal Primerose Tennis Club to advance into the final round of the qualifiers of 2011 Open de Bruxelles, a WTA event held in Belgian.
Ranked 427th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Uytvanck triumphed over the German, ranked 208 places above her, in a three set thriller on the red clay courts at Brussels. 17-year-old Belgian is eyeing for her
first title at this $618,000 event edging over her 23-year-old German rival on their first meeting.
Siegemund, who won the title at Lutz ITF at the start of this season, made quick in-roads and easily held her entire serves through her awesome agility. She saved both breakpoints conceded and converted two out of four breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage to win the opener with a 6-2 win. The seed clobbered less double faults and produced a higher first serve share of 81 percent as compared to Uytvanck’s 67 percent and registered an impressive 76 percent win on it.
The Belgian teenager, who won the title at Tessenderlo ITF, re-focused into the second set. She raised her level of game and clobbered a higher first serve share this time. Uytvanck saved two out of three breakpoints faced and
converted both breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch the equaliser with a 6-4 score line.
The youngster maintained her winning ways into the decider and held her opening serve spectacularly. She lost two of her serves later on but broke the German’s serve thrice to seal the deal by winning six games to three. Her 62
percent first serve share was lower than Siegemund’s 77 percent but she earned a convincing 50 percent win on it. The Belgian saved two breakpoints and converted three out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
Next challenge for the Belgian is the Taipei, Su-Wei Hsieh who upset third seed, Czech Sandra Zahlavova in straight sets. World number 343 Hsieh saved two out of seven breakpoint faced and converted eight out of fifteen breakpoint
opportunities to her advantage to seal the deal in one hour and forty-five minutes earlier that day.
