Alison Van Uytvanck undoes Patty Schnyder in the first round of Brussels Ladies Open
Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck improved her 2011 win loss mark to 20-1, as she outlasted Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round of the 2011 Brussels Ladies Open on Tuesday. Uytvanck needed one hour and forty
two minutes to reach the second round of the tournament for the first time in her career.
Schnyder, who is ranked 58th in the world, had been in absolute control, and for a while it looked like more of the same would take place. But Uytvanck was not about to go down in routine straight sets and made sure
that this match would become one of the most entertaining encounters of the day.
Uytvanck broke Schnyder twice to reach 4-0 in the first set. Schnyder aimed for a later surge in the set but her attempt was thwarted by sound defensive skills of Uytvanck, who sealed the first set 6-3.
Uytvanck fired a single ace, 48 percent of first serves and won 57 percent of points on them. While, her opponent was better on conversion as she scored two percent more than her but, still, could not manage to grab the first set.
Schnyder lost the first set with 47 percent on service, 45 percent on return and 46 percent of points in total.
In the second set, Schnyder battled back superbly from one set down against Uytvanck, who completely went off the track and struggled to keep her strokes inside the play. The Swiss pro produced a highly energetic performance and
proved to be the strongest player on court. She broke the Belgian twice, dropping just two games to clinch the second set 6-2.
But that was the last time Schnyder would be anywhere near striking distance of her Belgian opponent. Uytvanck immediately fought back and saved two breakpoints on her way to 4-2 lead. From there it was all over for Schnyder, who
appeared to be sweating throughout the third frame of play. Belgian pro never looked in danger and quickly seized a decisive second break before closing out the set at 6-2.
After putting in a shaky performance in the second set against Schnyder, Uytvanck will look to make amends against country fellow Yanina Wickmayer in the second round of the tournament. Wickmayer is installed as a sixth seed at
the tournament and defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia to reach the second round of the tournament.
Past results suggest that Wickmayer will easily win the second round match but these players have never played each other before which makes the Wickmayer Vs Uytvanck Brussels Ladies Open 2011 round 2 an interesting match to watch.
