Alison Young hopes to get selected for 2011 London Olympic Games – Sailing news
Great Britain’s Laser Radial windsurfer, Alison Young, finished on seventh podium with 86 points after 11 races, including a discard, during her run at the 2011 Perth ISAF Sailing World Championship in Australia. Bewdley’s Young could not climb the top podium
in the World Championships but she is looking forward, if she is selected, to perform well at the 2011 London Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old became one of the five Britons in the Laser Radial fleet, who were not able to impress the selection committee to be selected in the GBR squad and take part in next year’s Olympic Games. Young clinched one bullet and some convincing scores
to reach seventh podium, which seems a low score for selection.
Speaking to the local media at the conclusion of the world championship, Young said, “In terms of selection for the Olympics I don’t really know what is going to happen now, it is up to the RYA. I think the trials will probably carry on, they [the selectors]
are after medal winners and I haven’t proven that I can do that yet so that is how it is.”
She spoke about her competition in Australia and added, “The medal race was OK, I didn’t change my position overall and I am a little bit disappointed as there were definitely opportunities in that race.”
Young’s participation at the 2012 London Olympic Games depends upon her selection but as far as her performance in the recently finished world championship is concerned, it seems she might crash out of the Olympians’ list.
Overall, the Laser Radial gold medal was clinched by Marit Bouwmeester of Netherlands with 49 points. Evi van Acker from Belgium clinched silver medal with 53 points followed by Paige Railey on third, who grabbed 71 points to claim bronze medal.
Overall standings of Laser Radial class:
