Alistair Overeem knocks out Brock Lesnar; forces him into retirement - UFC 141
One of the most anticipated heavyweight division fights were held on Friday night at the UFC 141. American mixed martial art (MMA) fighter Brock Lesnar went into battle against the Dutch MMA fighter, Alistair Overeem, in
what was anticipated to be a brawl of epic proportions. The event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), took place on December 30, 2011 and witnessed Overeem winning after knocking out Lesnar in the first round, forcing the MMA powerhouse to
retire.
Ever since the fight between the two giants was booked, UFC and MMA community was buzzing about what could happen when these two would collide inside the UFC octagon fight ring. Both fighters had proved themselves in the
world of MMA but Overeem had an upper hand for he had fought in more than twenty bouts while Lesnar only had an experience of five fights.
The Strikeforce veteran, Overeem, was the first one to enter the UFC octagon. He made his debut at UFC 141 and the event was an important milestone for his career. The former UFC heavyweight champion, Lesnar, entered next,
as both fighters had a spiteful stare at each other, depicting the intensity of the fight to the restless spectators. As the first round began, both fighters bought their time in planning their onslaught, appearing not in any hot haste to begin the fight.
Overeem was slowly pacing to and fro anticipating an attack from his opponent, while Lesnar was keeping a safe distance from Overeem. The crowd is chanting both their names and is expecting a brawl which is rarely seen in
UFC. Overeem used a deceptive technique by throwing a punch but retreating from half way through. Lesnar was on the lookout of such attacks.
Lesnar was the first to make a strong move as he focused Overeem’s leg for a possible takedown but Overeem’s presence of mind was effective, as he again made some distance between him and Lesnar. As Lesnar was deciding his
next move, agile Overeem made a huge impact with his punch and knee strike. The fight was just getting started but Overeem had other plans. He gave a body kick to Lesnar which was strong enough to put the former UFC heavyweight champion on the ground.
This was the opening Overeem wanted as he wasted no time in initiating his onslaught on Lesnar. He launched straight clouts to Lesnar’s face and head but Lesnar was unable to respond. The referee stepped in to stop the fight
as Overeem created an upset by knocking out the former champion and most probably the favourite in the fight. The knock out came within three minutes of the first round.
