Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva may happen at UFC 156 – UFC Special
Antonio Silva might finally get his chance to face Alistair Overeem at UFC 156. The duo is expected to meet in February at UFC 156, but it is not confirmed yet. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Overeem will receive a license from the Nevada State
Athletic Commission once his suspension is ended and he will face Silva. The news was confirmed by UFC officials.
Antonio Silva currently stands with 17 wins and 4 losses in MMA and 1 win and 1 loss in UFC. On the other hand, Overeem stands with 36 wins and 11 losses in MMA and 1 win and 0 losses in the UFC.
UFC 156 is expected to be held on February 2 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The card will also have featherweight titlist Jose Aldo vs. former lightweight titlist Frankie Edgar.
In his recent interview with MMAJunkie.com, Silva said that he would be happy to take on Overeem once the latter is back in action.
“If Overeem really doesn't want to have to wait for a fight after his suspension is up, I am here ready to welcome him,” said Silva. “I respect him as an athlete. After all, he was K-1, DREAM and Strikeforce champion. But I am not worried about titles or
belts right now.
“Overeem is big and strong, but I know I can beat him. Even if was created in the lab, I can beat him.”
Overeem has been one of the most controversial fighters of UFC in the last two years due to his performance enhancing drug issue. He stood his grounds saying he is innocent still he was suspended. Following Overeem’s suspension, many other fighters were
suspended for the same reason. However, it gave rise to the question whether performance enhancing drugs are legal or not.
For now, Overeem is under suspension and he is hoping to come in for a major fight, which might be against Antonio Silva at UFC 156. If it happens, Silva will have a major chance of proving himself against a top notch fighter. On the other hand, Overeem
will be proving his mettle as a fighter who can fight without performance enhancing drugs.
