Alize Cornet battles past Patricia Mayr-Achleitner to enter quarters – e-Boks Open 2012
French starlet, Alize Cornet, needed three sets to outfox the Austrian challenger, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, at the e-Boks Open 2012 on Wednesday. She nudged up a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory against the world number 103 to book a spot in the final eight at this
indoor hard court event held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The 22-year-old stayed on track to bid for her second WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) career title after tumbling over Mayr-Achleitner at this International-level tournament. Cornet not only advanced into the quarter-finals but also improved to a 3-0 lifetime
in the head-to-head series against the Austrian.
The former world number 11, Cornet, thundered into the Farum Arena and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Apart from losing the next two games, the French re-ignited her old spark and went on a five-game killing spree, ultimately
sealing the opener by winning six games to two.
Mayr-Achleitner got in action in the proceeding set despite losing her serve in the opening game. She recovered in the second game and after capitalised on another break chance in the fourth game, the Austrian jumped to a 4-1 lead. Mayr-Achleitner broke
the French’s serve once more in the last game and clinched the equaliser with a 6-2 score line.
Currently ranked 107th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Cornet re-gathered her strength in the final set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game. She lost her serve in the very next game but cashed in another break opportunity in the
fifth game, consequently going 4-2 up. Despite squandering her lead again in the eighth game, the French broke her opponent’s serve once more and pulled out the decider at 7-5.
Next challenger for Cornet is the conqueror of the match between her compatriot, Pauline Parmentier, and the top seed local ace, Caroline Wozniacki. The Danish number one is unbeaten at this event for the last two years and is most likely to be her next
opponent. Cornet needs to lift her game to overpower the former world number one and advance further at this event.
