Alize Cornet drags down Su-Wei Hsieh to qualify for the main round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
French representative, Alize Cornet, stunned the 80th ranked Taiwanese, Su-Wei Hsieh, to qualify for the main round of the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday. She gobbled up the win with 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 score line and booked
a date with the Israeli tennis icon, Shahar Peer.
It was the second battle between the two professionals and stunningly the French player had won the earlier face-off as well. However, it was way back in the 2009 during the Hopman Cup in Perth.
Hsieh went down early in the opening set; was brutally smashed to all corners of the courts from the start. Corner clasped the four games lead upfront with the help of a couple of breakthroughs. Finally, the fifth game proved to
be the first success for the Malaysian Open champion; scores had tickled over to 4-1 at that stage. A double trade of breakthroughs ended the resistance from the superior ranked Taiwanese who looked a bit out of touch.
The second set witnessed early breakpoints for both players that kept the scores together. Another exchange of breakpoints further advanced the scores to 3-3. Both players held their respective serves before being broken in the
ninth and 10th game of the set.
The critical stage of the match was underway and Cornet was the one who became the victim of pressure play. She lost the serve in the 11th game; gifting a vital breakthrough to her opponent and lost the set lead afterwards.
The stage was set for a perfect matchup in the final set. Both players registered serve holds before breaking each other serves to move the scores at 2-2. Cornet held the serve in the following game before the five successive breakthroughs
were traded in the ratio of 3:2 for the French.
It confirmed the win for the 22-years-old Cornet who was extremely ecstatic at stomping the superior ranked player. She will definitely raise few ranks after accomplishing her task of qualifying for the first round of the tournament,
contested in Miami. She has been in sublime run of form in the recent past and a strong contender to upset the Israeli player.
