Fourth seeded Alize Cornet flogged unseeded Vitalia Diatchenko in the final qualifying round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The challengers took up the gauntlet on the indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow and after a lengthy
two hours and thirty two minutes the fourth seeded Frenchwoman survived a mid match fall of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 against the unseeded Russian Diatchenko on Monday the 17th of October 2011.
The first round of the match was commenced by Diatchenko, who was unable to ward off Cornet and erred on her service game. As Cornet capitalized on a breakpoint, she then went on to holding her serve to take a mini lead of 2-0
on the scoreboard. However, in the following two games Diatchenko managed to equalize the score to 2-2 with a hold of serve and break.
As the two won on alternate service game, the score tied once more at 3-3. It was in the seventh game that Diatchenko double faulted on her serve and endorsed a crucial breakpoint to Cornet, who then held her serve to take the
lead of 5-3. Cornet was now only a game away from clogging the opening set and as Diatchenko served her forehand shot went way ward. This resulted in Cornet bagging the opening game and was now one up in the match.
The second set of the match was commenced by Cornet and this time she got off to a bad start as she was broken in the first game. However, not wanting her adversary to take the lead, she quickly broke back in the second game and
tied the score at 1-1. In the third and the fourth game, Diatchenko managed to take the lead at 3-1 with a hold of serve and then by capitalizing on a breakpoint.
Amidst the fifth and the sixth game the two again held serve and the scoreboard had shifted to a 4-2. In the seventh game Diatchenko capitalized on the third breakpoint and was now only a game away. As the Russian served for the
set, she smashed a beautiful backhand winner and secured her second set victory.
The decisive set of the match was inaugurated by Cornet, who was unable to hold her serve and then quickly made a return by breaking back in the second game. The two once more broke each other back-to-back in the third and the
fourth game to tie the score at 2-2.
However, in the fifth game Cornet shifted into top gear and wanted to cut the goose chase, so she not only held her serve but utilized a breakpoint. By the end of the sixth game the score had progressed to 4-2 with cornet leading.
In the last two games the Frenchwoman utilized the serve-break technique to bag the set and the match.
Up next for the fourth seeded French Cornet is sixth seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the main draw of the event.
