Alize Cornet hits back at Bojana Bobusic to escape the round one upset – Brisbane International 2013
World number 44, Alize Cornet, registered the first victory of the new season at the opening round of the Brisbane International on Monday but not before she witnessed a massive scare that almost forced her to fall victim to an
upset at the hands of the Aussie qualifier, Bojana Bobusic. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman lost the opening set but bounced back well to secure the following two sets in a total time of an hour and 51 minutes. Final scores were 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The 331st ranked Aussie gave a massive jolt to her rival by winning the first breakthrough in the opening game of the match. She continued to pile pressure on her counterpart and met blow-by-blow to her. Both players
exchanged breakthroughs in the middle of the first set before the local crushed her rival with a fascinating winner down the line to capture another break point. Bobusic successfully served for the set and sent a strong message to her rival.
Cornet stayed calm and composed at the start of the second set; just struck the ball at its merit and finally sneaked a breakthrough in the sixth game that allotted her lead of 4-2. She kept the meagre lead intact until the end
of the second set and enforced a decider into play. The build up to the final battle was superb and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the spirit of the local qualifier.
A nervy beginning to the final set witnessed a trade of breakthroughs by the athletes before the 44th ranked Frenchwoman gathered another breakpoint and protected it with a serve hold. Bobusic started to panic and lost
rhythm in her play. She managed to secure just one point on her serve in the fifth game that allowed a massive lead of 4-1 to her rival.
Cornet capitalized on the scenario and frustrated her opponent that resulted in another breakpoint in the seventh game of the final set. It was the last action from the encounter. Cornet will have to go through the 15-time Grand
Slam Champion, Serena Williams, on Tuesday to book a berth in the quarter-final of the Brisbane International.
