Alize Cornet ousts Lenka Wienerova in second qualifying round – Kremlin Cup 2011
Fourth seeded French Alize Cornet got rid of Slovak Lenka Wienerova in the second qualifying round of the Kremlin Cup 2011. The two challengers battled it out on indoor hard courts of the Olympic Stadium, Moscow. After just sixty
eight minutes the fourth seeded French flogged the unseeded Slovak (Wienerova) in straight sets of 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday the 16th of October.
The first round of the set was initiated by the fourth seeded French, who skilfully held her serve and then went on to capitalizing on a breakpoint to place herself on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. Cornet again held her serve
and then broke her adversary for the second time to further increase her lead to 4-0 on the scoreboard by the end of the fourth game.
It was in the fifth game that Wienerova made a comeback and that too by breaking Cornet to take a game but that was the only game that Wienerova could bag against Cornet. As the French once more capitalized on a break, she was
now only a game away from bagging the opening set and as she smashed a beautiful backhand winner, she not only bagged the opening set with a breadstick victory but was now one up in the match.
Cornet capitalized on three out of five breakpoints and had an amazing return which led her to achieve 72 percent of her total returns in the set. Mean while, Wienerova only capitalized on 1 out of the two breakpoints and had an
appalling return which cost her the opening set.
The second set of the match was initiated by Wienerova and she successfully placed herself on the scoreboard at 1-0. Trailing behind her was the fourth seeded French and she too held on to her service game and placed herself right
beside Wienerova at 1-1 on the scoreboard.
However, in the third game Wienerova double faulted on her second serve and endorsed a game to adversary. As Cornet held her serve in the fourth game, she took the lead o n the scoreboard at 3-1. The two players then held serve
for the following two games and by the end of the sixth game the scoreboard had progressed to a 4-2 with Cornet leading.
Amidst the last two games, Wienerova again double faulted on her second serve and endorsed Cornet with a crucial break. By the end of the seventh game, Cornet was only a game away from her victory and as she held serve for the
last, she smashed an awesome backhand shot on the line and secured her victory of the set and the match.
Next up for the Frenchwoman is Russian Vitalia Diatchenko in the third qualifying round of the event.
