Alize Cornet outdoes Estrella Cabeza Candela in the quarter-finals – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2012
French tennis prodigy, Alize Cornet, kept her winning roll at the NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies tournament in Bad Gastein, Austria and forced her way into the semi-final draw of the tournament with authority. The 22-year-old registered
a thumping straight sets victory over the unseeded Spanish contender, Estrella Cabeza Candela, settling the final score line at 6-1, 6-2, in the quarter-final brawl on Friday.
Seeded at number seven in the tournament draw, Cornet has been in her sublime form. She hasn’t dropped a single set throughout this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour event, winning all her initial round matches
in straight sets. Likes of Candela proved no match for the world number 73 and she barley spared three games in the entire matchup for her before sealing her 28th victory of the running season.
Candela had already suffered a defeat at the hands of the Frenchwoman but it was a fierce battle between these two back in 2007 at Acapulco, Mexico. It was a far easy win for Cornet on Friday and she extended her lead to 2-0 in
the head-to-head series against the Spaniard.
"It's my third semifinal here so I think I really like the tournament and play well here," Cornet said in her post match reviews. "Estrella has a really good game, but I also think it suits my style and against her I played the
best I have all week. Unfortunately, I lost against Pervak last year in the first round. It was a very tight match and she was playing good and I was not so confident. This year is different, I'm playing better so I know it's going to be an even tougher match
and we will see who wins," Cornet added.
With seven out of 16 cracking serve breaks and 19 out of 26 first serve points, it was an easy breezy win for Cornet, sending her to the semi-finals of the tournament convincingly. Aiming for her maiden WTA championship title of
the season, Cornet will face the third seeded Kazakh opponent, Ksenia Pervak, in the round of four. Pervak was successful against the American qualifier, Chichi Scholl, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarter-final round.
