How about these interactive online maps.

This one is like a puzzle.  It tells you the state name and capital and you have to place it on the map.

One way could be finding something you like about each state, or region... and states in the region. Also study a map more... ones with highway 's and geographical things.

Download a blank map from the internet. Print several copies. Fill in one with all the states. Study it for a while. Now, take a blank one and fill in all you can remember. Compare to the correct one and now, add the states you missed IN RED. Study. Repeat. After several times, you'll get it -- works great for exchange students!

There are 4 Time Zones for 50 States. Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern time zone. I would suggest study time zone one by one. It's easy to remember that way.

Memorize the song! That's how most schools do it. Sing it over and over again, lol.
