All 6 of my hermit crabs suddenly dug themselves under at the same time?

I checked to make sure everything was perfect for them so it's not something environmentally I don't think..their humidity and temperature and everything is as close to perfect as you could get. They just suddenly all dug themselves under all at the same time and haven't come out. They couldn't all be molting at the same time, could they? I'll leave them and see what happens but still curious and slightly worried about the little guys.

  1. Based on my experience with hermit crabs, they like to be buried in the sand. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if you notice they aren't eating or drinking, pick them up and check on them. Sometimes it appears they are deceased, but they aren't. I used to play it safe and not give up on them until I had waited a day or two. When they are moulting they are not as active.

I do hope your little guys are OK.

  2. This is perfectly normal hermit crab behavior as they love to burrow underneath the soil. It is unlikely that all six will be molting at the same time, so I wouldn't worry about it. Sooner or later, you'll see them pop up for food/water, even if it's not at the same time.

If you haven't already, you should also put in some driftwood branches or large plastic plants for them to climb on, so they don't always have to burrow. They like to climb too, and more options = happier crabs!

Hope that helped; it's good to know that you are paying attention to your hermit crabs. Good luck! =)
