All England Open: Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka upsets Du Pengyu in Men’s Singles first round
Indonesia’s emerging shuttler Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka put up sensational show of top quality badminton when he defeated his higher ranked rival Du Pengyu of China in Men’s Singles first round of All England Open Premier Super Series 2012 in England, on Wednesday,
March 7.
The World Number 28 Rumbaka showed his brilliance in front of a huge local crowd at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham and ousted Pengyu, who has been placed at number 11 in the world standings.
The Indonesian played top class game for 69 minutes and remained successful in beating the higher ranked Pengyu in a thrilling three-set contest.
In the first set, both men showed their aggressive approach as they played at their maximum speed and pushed each other everywhere in the court.
However, Rumbaka was positive as he did not commit any mistake in the first half and remained ahead of his rival on the score board.
The lower ranked Indonesian continued his dominating run in the concluding part of opening set and did not let his higher ranked Chinese opponent to take charge of the game at any stage.
Rumbaka remained successful in taking the first game with a comfortable 21-16 score on the board.
In the second set, both shuttlers remained close until the one-minute interval as they played at the same speed.
Nevertheless, Pengyu employed his impressive skills and remained dominant in the ending half of second set.
On the other hand, Rumbaka could not continue his power play as his rival grew stronger in his defensive shots.
The Indonesian could not manage to produce positive strokes in the concluding half and lost the second game with a margin of 15-21.
In the deciding game, both shuttlers grabbed the attention of huge crowd by playing at their best speed. They employed attacking strokes to create a reasonable lead but no one could make it until the interval.
After the break, they continued progressing in the similar fashion and reached at the concluding stage of deciding game.
At this stage, Rumbaka managed to execute a few impressive shots in the right areas and won the set with a close score of 21-19.
Rumbaka won this fabulous fight in three games with a 21-16, 15-21 and 21-19 score on the board.
