All England Open Premier Super Series: Daren Liew overpowers Hsuan Yi Hsueh to enter into main round
Malaysia’s top back-up player Daren Liew penetrated into Men’s Singles main round after beating Hsuan Yi Hsueh of Chinese Taipei in the qualifying round of All England Open Premier Super Series 2012 on Tuesday, March 6, in England.
The World Number 43 Daren played to his maximum potential against his higher ranked Taipei opponent and managed to win the fight in a hard-fought three-set contest.
Hsuan Yi played well but remained unlucky in the ending points of final set and lost this 73-minute contest with a tight margin on the score board.
It was one of the most thrilling encounters of the first day of All England Open as both shuttlers employed their impressive skills and entertained the huge crowd that came to watch live action at National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
Right from the starting points, both men played fast badminton and remained equal as no one could set up a comfortable lead until the one-minute interval when the Malaysian was slightly ahead at 11-9.
After the break, Hsuan Yi accelerated his speed and levelled the score without facing any trouble. Both men again progressed closely until the score reached at 19-19.
At this stage, Daren executed a few fabulous strokes and remained successful in taking the first game with a 21-19 score on the board.
In the second game, both shuttlers again put up superb show of thrilling badminton by playing to their maximum speed. They took the bird early and did not miss any chance to end rallies. Until the break, the score was quite close from both sides.
After the break, they continued playing at the same speed and reached at 19-19 when Daren executed a couple of wrong shots and lost the set with a tight 19-21 score on the board.
In the decider, Daren played well but not enough to take a comfortable lead until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the Taipei shuttler remained close to his lower ranked rival until the concluding phase of the final set.
Daren controlled the pace of rallies at this crucial stage and scored two consecutive points to take the game with a narrow margin of 21-19.
The Malaysian won this qualifying-round contest in 73 minutes with a 21-19, 19-21 and 21-19 score on the board.
