In the book Gone with the Wind it said that sometimes Rhett would be staring at Scarlett like a cat at a mousehole. What does that mean?

  1. He hoped that she'd give some indication of love, but she never does. He stares and stares, waiting for a confession to come out of the mousehole, but none ever does...So he becomes tired of "staring at her like a cat at a mousehole" and decides that she's too obsessed with Ashley to love him, thus leaves her.


  2. I would say that Rhett was staring at her waiting for any sign of love or any sign that he could be the one for her.  Just waiting to pounce, if the opportunity came along.
