Serial killers and rapists are extremely rare, not at all the way the media pretends. Like being behind every tree waiting to pounce on the next kid in the park.

My home town was the starting place of the Zodiac Killer in the late 1960's. Turned out he was an Ivy League professor nutcase who wanted to talk to God about his dead mother by using cryptic codes and mathematics. Maybe he thought he was the reincarnation of Pythagoras. Who knows. He was the evil genius type, not the poor, uneducated stereotype that's usually presented for criminals.

Past abuse in family or dating relationships, insanity, need to control everything, or just sick people.

In the simplest terms, they are so self-possessed, they only care about appeasing their own appetites.  As long as their wants are satiated, it doesn't matter how they affect other people.
