When Paul goes home on leave he feels he has changed. Describe two incidents that show this change, and explain why he feels he no longer fits into his former life.

  1. I'll give you one I'm sure of, and one possible ...

    The one I'm sure of is when Paul is rummaging through the books in his bedroom, looking at the things he read and enjoyed as a child (and even as a teenager still in school), only to find that now they're totally meaningless to him.

    The "possible" when Paul is walking through town in uniform, and people clap him on the back and tell him to keep giving the other side h**l (or something like that).  As far as Paul is concerned, they might as well not bother saying anything because they have no idea what it's like up at the front.  After a few incidents like that, for the rest of the time he's home on leave, when he goes out he wears civvies instead of his uniform.

    As for not fitting in with his former life, it's because Paul now feels disconnected both from 1) books he used to love and 2) people in his hometown he's known all his life.

    You should re-read the part where he's home on leave to make sure I've got it right, but I think that should at least get you started.  Hope that helps!
