All-Star forward Brandon Roy eyeing a return to NBA next season – NBA Update
All-Star forward Brandon Roy recently took to his friend Will Conroy’s twitter account and announced that he was eyeing a comeback into the NBA next season.
Roy was one of the biggest talents to come out of the 2006 NBA Draft, and was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves as a 6th overall pick. He was immediately traded to Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for draft rights to Randy
Foye.
Roy was impressive in his first season, where he averaged 16.8 points. He won the rookie of the year trophy for that season, and landed in the select category of basketball players who have won the rookie of the year trophies.
He was selected as an All Star in his second NBA season, and from there on played in three consecutive All Star Games.
Roy had the best season of his career in the 2008-2009 NBA season, which was his third in the league. He averaged 22.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 48% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc. He had
become one of the biggest names in the NBA in a matter of years and had a bright future ahead of him as the Portland Trail Blazers offered him a maximum contract and looked to rebuild the team around him.
However, Roy suffered from knee injuries throughout the 2010-2011 season. He only played 47 games in that season, as the Trail Blazers announced at the beginning of the season that he would be out indefinitely due to a lack of
cartilage in his knees.
Roy did return in the playoffs that season, but played in a limited role off the bench. In that stretch, he was responsible for orchestrating two Trail Blazers victories over the eventual champions Dallas Mavericks. Portland lost
that series 4-2 and Roy announced retirement from the NBA prior to the start of the 2011-2012 NBA season due to chronic injuries.  His retirement allowed the franchise to save their waive-off option, one which they used on Greg Oden.
Now Roy has sparked a new debate with his announcement that he will be making a comeback next season, which means he will be a free agent to sign with any team.
Given his history with injuries, it remains to be seen if he will be able to land a contract. If any team wishes to pursue him, they will be looking at him as a bench player with a limited role, or as a backup of one of the starting
five.
