I recently moved and am thinking of investing in a sailboat, if not first renting one before buying my own. What are some good books and articles that I can learn everything there is to know about sailboats ( basic knowledge, repairs, actual sailing ) Looking for free on-line materials but will buy a book if its worth it.

  1. It takes a lifetime, and more, to learn all you need to know about sailing.  Chapman Piloting and Seamanship is the bible of sailing and small boat handling, so it should be a purchase - something you own, if you want to be a serious sailor.

Sailing for Dummies is a good starter book, but no book can replace hands on experience, so find someone who knows how to sail who is willing to spend some time with you and teach you the ropes, so to speak.  If you can find a seasoned cruiser who will give you a few pointers, so much the better.

Check out www.sailnet.com and you can begin to make contact with sailors.  You can learn a great deal just by browsing sites like that one.

Find a marina in your area and spend some time there, getting to know the locals, and make some contacts.  If there is a boatyard in your area go there, and talk to people working on their own sailboats.

Any book that you buy about sailing when you know little or nothing about it is worth it in my opinion, because even if you learn only one thing from it, that one thing may someday be the knowledge that will save your life, or the lives of others.  Here are a few links that will lead you to dozens of books about various aspects of sailing.

    Happy sailing!

  2. the best sailing book I know for beginners is Sailing for Dummies it is packed with info and techniques. I would very much suggest this book as a starting point.
