All about Elk hunting

What is the average range an elk is shot at. What kinda of gun should i bring. I own a 270. win browning a-bolt medallion and a 300. wsm browning a bolt stainless hunter. What kinda of ammo should i bring and what grain.

  1. The .270 is adequate if you can cosistently hit where you aim and keep your shots within 150 M. This is a range that most game animals are taken. Some longer shots are needed every season, but unless you are in open terrain they are not typical.  In Washington, the RM taken in the east side of the Cascade range are smaller animals and the range is longer, the Roosevelt are in the heavier timbered area on the west side and the shots are closer but the animals larger.  I use a .30-06 with 220 grain slug, for deer a 170 gr.  


  2. Take both, use the .300 with something that's over 180gr ,  has controlled expansion (it'll probably list CXP3 and a picture of elk or moose on the box if you buy factory loaded ammo) and don't shoot beyond a range you cant consistently hit the vitals or which leaves the bullet with less than 1,200 foot pounds.
