Question:

All black hakar?

If the Hakar is a traditional Maori challenge, then shouldn't it just be the native New Zealanders in the team performing it? Why do the caucasian players also perform it, if it is obviously not from their heritage or ancestry?

  1. that sounds a bit racist: why can't the caucasian members of the team celebrate maori culture?

They perform the ritual not only to attempt to cause fear in the opposition, but to engender a feeling of togetherness in the team. What would it look like if 4 or 5 caucasion lads stood at the side looking sheepish while the rest of their team perform the haka?

Nobody challenges the right of the maori people to practice christianity....

Besides: because of the mixing and almost complete integration of the cultures in New Zealand, many of the apparently caucasian players have maori ancestry.

A lot of the "Maori" players are from pacific islands other than New Zealand (Jonah Lomu is Tongan for example: nobody ever challenged his right to perform the haka- also Muliaina was born in Western Samoa)

  2. steady on there hibernia78 you can banter all you like about the all blacks the haka whatever I'll take it all in stride - however once you start dissing Maori culture I take offence, the treaty is something you know nothing about.....

however back to the question the haka is steeped in history I agree with nicki h it is a part of NZ tradition.

I am not 100% sure, however off the top of my head I think they did perform with the ABs in the first world cup back in 87.

  3. Rugby is a team sport and the caucasian players are part of that team, therefore should be part of the Maori challenge.

You will be suggesting next that Hayley Westernra should not be allowed to sing Pokarekare Ana!

  4. it out of respect for the wounderfull people of maori

  5. Oh well it's just a g*y tribal dance, quite silly really. The only thing intimidating in the WC is Sebastian Cabal.

btw ashar/97 RELAAAX  you are way too edgy, getting offended like that?? boo hoo we don't want any feelings hurt here now do we, hmmm?

  6. It gets more people mixing in with other people, instead of everyone arguing over one thing we should all share

    =D

  7. NZ signed The Treaty of Waitangi (between the Crown and Maori) in 1840. The Treaty as a founding document of New Zealand is between Maori and New Zealanders of European descent and by definition includes all pakeha and new immigrants. One of the principles of the Treaty is the concept of rangatiratanga where Māori are to retain control and enjoyment over their resources and taonga (which includes tangible items such as language and culture). The Treaty established a partnership, and imposes on the partners the duty to act reasonably and in good faith.

While The Treaty of Waitangi remains a source of debate in NZ politics, New Zealand recognises Maori as the indigenous people of Aotearoa NZ and in forming a partnership Maori culture is part of our history and ancestry and a valued aspect of New Zealander society.
