All cricket boards need to work together to combat match-fixing: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Alan-Gooch-c60530 – Cricket News Update
In light of the renewed reports of match-fixing taking place in international and County cricket, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, has called on the cricket boards around the world to unite in order to cleanse the game off corruption.
“The authorities all around the world - the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625, the ECB, the other cricket boards, should all be working collectively together to get things right and make sure their players are well educated as to the dangers that are lurking out there,” he said.
The cricketing world was rocked by a recent report published in UK’s Sunday Times, which revealed that match-fixing posed a very real threat to the game. An undercover reporter recorded a conversation with a Delhi-based bookmaker, who revealed that
thousands of pounds could be offered to players who agreed to fix matches, “typically £44,000 ($70,000) to batsmen for slow scoring; £50,000 ($80,000) for bowlers who concede runs; and as much as £750,000 ($1.2m) to players or officials who can guarantee the
outcome of a match.”
The bookmaker went on to add that English County cricket was an especially easy target, since the players and matches were generally low-profile, and thus not closely monitored.
The report has raised alarm bells all across the cricket-playing world. In the past six months, three high-profile cases have been brought to light – Pakistan’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Salman-Butt-c2418 were convicted late last year for spot-fixing during
a Test match at Lord’s, followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lalit-Kumar-Modi-c72144 for having
falsely accused him of match-fixing in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League.
The ICC has announced its intent to launch an investigation into the charges made by the newspaper report, and the ECB has further pushed its anti-corruption education programme.
Gooch, who is currently with the England team as they prepare to battle it out against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in a Test series on March 26, expressed sadness at the fact that instances of match-fixing kept resurfacing, and implored the cricketing world to see this as
a challenge to put things in order.
