As the Washington Nationals got Gio Gonzalez to their fold recently, all eyes are on the Chicago Cubs’ Matt Garza, a promising starter that the club has in its possession. Reports trickling in indicated that the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Boston
Red Sox have intentions to get their hands on the player.
The San Diego Padres may also be in line to go for an exchange, sending Anthony Rizzo there to get the pitcher from the Chicago Cubs. However, what materialises at the end is something that cannot be said with certainty.
A look at the 2011 regular season shows how wonderfully the player has performed. The fact that he maintains consistency adds to his credentials, making him all set to be acquired by any team which wants a strong bullpen.
Matt Garza appeared in 31 games this past season, representing the Chicago Cubs, to pitch 198.0 innings, maintaining an ERA of 3.32 with a WHIP of 1.26. The pitcher gave up 186 hits and 90 runs, winning 10 of the games and losing 10 out of the 31 starts.
In several interviews, the player said he enjoys being with the Chicago Cubs. “These guys are so awesome. We have a really good team. That's one reason I wish I wasn't a senior. We are all really good friends and we always stay positive,” Matt Garza said.
“I'm having fun here, taking it all in. I just wanted to come out here and make the best of it. It was exciting just to play on the same field as these guys.”
Representing the National League, he stood 9th in strikeouts with 197 of them, and then remained 9th in CG (complete games).
However, the moves of his trade are something that may unsettle many a fans in the Chicago Cubs. The fact that the pitcher of his calibre shall uplift any bullpen may force the Chicago Cubs to retain the player. Nonetheless, at the end, the whole matter
hinges upon how the Cubs see at the market, and weigh their options to fill the roster.
