All hopes of German fans crashes out with the loss of Angelique Kerber at Olympics – Tennis News
World number seven, Angelique Kerber, crashed out of the London Olympics on the eve of Thursday and so did the hopes of Germans of winning a medal in the women category of tennis. She was plonked by the world number one, Victoria
Azarenka, in straight sets 4-6, 5-7.
It wasn’t the fault of the 24-year-old German. She just missed out to hold serves on two different occurrences that forced her down in both sets and diminished her chances of getting off the mark in the head-to-head series with
the 23-year-old Belarusian who is now 3-0 ahead.
Despite losing the match, Kerber showed great sportswoman spirit and complimented the performance of her rival. She commented in a post-match interview "Vika was playing very well. I tried to make my game plan work, but in the
important moments she was better. I fought until the last point and I was thinking maybe I could take it to a third set, but she was fighting until the last point also. It was very close - it was a very good match today. Only one of us could win today. It
was still a good tournament for me."
Kerber was the last hope for the Germans in the hunt for a medal at Olympics. Her compatriots, Sabine Lisicki and Julia Goerges, had earlier lost their matches in the pre-quarterfinal stage so she was the only one left in the draw
to take a stride further and keep the hopes of her nation alive but the luck wasn’t on her side and she stooped to the top seed superstar.
Sabine Lisicki who was seeded 15th in the tournament was able to win a set against the 25-year-old Russian third seed, Maria Sharapova, but failed to keep the momentum alive and lost the following two sets that forced
her out of the competition.
World number 24, Julia Goerges, sent packing the second ranked Pole starlet, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the opening round that showed her class and composure. However, she couldn’t control the unforced errors against the 14th
seed Maria Kirilenko in the third round and bowed out to her in straight sets.
So that rounds up the hopes of German for any medal in the Women Tennis.
