I started up the laptop with windows xp on it this morning, there was never any problems with it before. The computer was very sluggish and was taking a long time to start up so I restarted it using ctrl+alt+delete. It restarted and the first time open screen thing showed up (stuff like tour windows xp and having to install new programs), all my documents have disappeared except those in the recycle bin. I need to get these documents back, is there anything I can do to get them back?

  1. A proper reset, may help?

Although does not sound to promising?

come see me and give me more details...

Another thought ... search for all your *.doc files..... <<< I take it your using word...

  2. It may even be some spyware you accidentally picked up

Run a complete scan with the new spybot 1.6.0.30, and delete all

Download from the "Softpedia secure download (RO)"

Hint: When downloading and you get to the options window, remove check from "Separate secure shredder application

  3. it sounds to me like someone setup a user account on your machine without telling you.  New users will see the xp tour and so on when booting.  Try clicking start menu, then the arrow to shutdown and other options, then select log off.  You can then log in on your own account and delete the other one in control panel/users

  4. Yeah! The best and easiest, system restore. If system restore is not available for a previous date than the day it happened, somehow or other, your user account have been reset.

Another way is to go to C:\Documents and Settings\(Your user name)\Desktop, where your desktop items will be shown. In the same folder, you'll have documents and recent documents etc.

Not sure what else you can do to find your stuff.

  5. go to my computer > double click on the C drive > documents and settings > now look for your profile name > if ever we have profile problems we rename the clients profile name within here, check all the profiles to see if you can see your docs, if so either copy them to your new profile, or rename the profile back, if you profile has changed, check other settings such as internet favorites > email settings etc

you'll need to login as another account to do this though.

  6. Try rebooting once again, Its probably not closed correctly on shutdown.

  7. You can try using search to search ur file... if still can't find ur file that's mean ur computer might be a problem (Hard Disk).
