Now that she is in middle school, I am unable to follow her to class and insure that homework has been turned in, etc, I can insure that it is done, but not that it is turned in. she is emberassed, failing and have no recourse at this point but to get medical help and an evaluation of add. my husband refuses, though we are going to see the doc tommorrow. Has anyone else had this issue and how did you handle it? P.S. I am medicated for ADD and have had fantastic results and just want my daughter to have the oppotunity also.

  1. Its not going to hurt to get her tested. Either way you will know for sure. My brothers all have add or adhd. My daughter may have it  and my mom told me that caffine will actually calm a add or adhd child.  I have yet to try it on my daughter (usually dont give her sugar) but you can try and see if it works.

  2. Get her tested and i will say i know what adhd is like and was diagnosed when  i was 16 and that was feb. 2001, since being put on medication i been on concerta, adderall and now i am on ritalin and ritalin has helped the most, i was a much better student and person.I have combined type. and have some other disabilities on top of those. I was also diagnosed with ADD also when i was in 11th grade and that was in 2003. If you decide to do this, please make sure that if your daughter has no weight problems  that you do not have her take adderall because it makes you lose lots of weight. I wish i was on adderall sometimes because i gained too much weight and i am close to 200 because i was on paxil cr at one time and then for 6 months or longer i was on risperdal  which i am off now and it really made me gain weight fast. It was bad for me and hurts that i gained too much weight. I am so thankful i am not taking risperdal anymore.

  3. This is your child you know her the best. You need to decide on what will best help her. Good luck.

  4. I am a teacher that currently has three students that have ADD. Two are on medication, one is not.  The one who is not on medication and/or getting help is struggling terribly. It breaks my heart to see her try to get out of working because she is soo frustrated. She pretty much cries on a daily basis. If you do take her to the doctor, and is diagnosed with ADD doesn't mean she has to have medication. There are other ways & strategies to help her handle it.The schools aren't requesting testing for more $$, most teachers are truely concerned. We don't go into it for the money (WHAT $$). You clearly go into this profession because you care about children. If you yourself is ADD, how  would you feel on a daily basis without your medication?

  5. Have her checked out, one way or another your going to get an answer, it could be laziness on her part or it could be a medical condition, that needs attention she still has high school to go through and if it is medical it's only going to be harder on her and more embarrassing, if not treated.

  6. You could also have the teacher ask your daughter each day does she have anything to turn in that is what I do with my nephew when I go and pick him up from school. He is 15 and has ADHD

  7. Only good can come of her being evaluated, but it should be a complete eval to look at all areas of her development. Also, keep in mind that Middle School is a problem for many kids. Try and get your husband to understand what life was like before your diagnosis and medication. If he didn't know you then he may not realize the difference. Try and describe what was going on in your head and what life was like. In the end, your daughter's well being and education are most important and you may have to defy your husband.

  8. I have had ADD as long as I can remember (I just didn't know it then) and was recently diagnosed. I really wish my parents would have taken me to get some medication. I am 25 now. I could have done so much better in school. I was a C student but never cracked a book. Now in college for nursing I have a 3.8 GPA. It has really changed my life.

  9. They request that so the school will get extra money because your daughter will have the "disability" diagnosis.

  10. Quick test for ADD - give your daughter a cup of strong coffee and see if she calms down and can concentrate better. If she can, is ADD. If not its behavioral.
