  2. With apologies to the first poster, they're incorrect: competition with other species HAS been shown to drive species extinct.

    Of the ones you've given, I'd go with overpopulation with the following caveat: there exists the potential for it to drive down resource levels to a point that the populations crash below a point that they can recover. Alternatively, the overpopulation might coincide with a crash in its resources driven by other factors. This scenario would be most likely to apply to a species endemic to a small area, such as an island.

    Rapid and/or dramatic environmental changes & scarcity of resources can certainly lead to extinction.

  3. Adequate food supply is not a mere challenge to species survival. The first three factors could make species become specialized and more adaptive to their environment thus making these 3 as challenges.
