    Pre-vitamin D is synthesized in the skin with ultraviolet light.  It then spontaneously becomes vitamin D, which requires two subsequent steps of activation: hydroxylation at the 25 and 1 positions.  The 25-hydroxylation step takes place in the liver, while the 1-alpha-hydroxylation step takes place in the kidney:
